The construction industry is facing surging housing demand, declining productivity and increased demand for lower embodied carbon building materials over traditional building materials. Building construction alone contributes approximately 9% of global carbon emissions, equivalent to three billion tons of CO2 annually.

First-of-its-kind direct air capture deal forges path

Google announced a new deal to purchase carbon removal credits from direct air capture provider Holocene, at the lowest price on record for this technology: $100 per ton, for delivery by the early 2030s. Holocene is a Cohort 2022 Innovation Crossroads participant. Read more

The Associated Press wrote a story about Nth Cycle's new plant opening in Fairfield, Ohio. The company, part of Cohort 2018, Nth Cycle builds systems that yield nickel and cobalt from a form of shredded lithium ion batteries and nickel scrap from electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

The University of Tennessee Research Foundation recently executed a license agreement with Endeavor Composites, a process nearly six years in the making. Endeavor Composites, a Cohort 2019 company, was founded by Hicham Ghossein and provides a zero-waste circular economy solution for composite manufacturers. 


The Tennessee Valley Authority published a feature story about Holocene, stating that the company "and its technology could help Tennessee Valley Authority reach its aspiration to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2050."

Teknovation highlighted the start of joint programming between Innovation Crossroads and the Spark Cleantech Accelerator, as well as the August Founders' Forum.

Cohort 2017's Mitchell Ishmael with Shift Thermal participated in a recent episode of "Energizing Tennessee." In the episode, Ishmael discusses the company’s advanced thermal energy storage solution and company milestones.
